Yato Chain Saw Sharpening Kit with 18V 2Ah Li-Ion Battery
The Yato Chain Sharpener Set is an 18V battery-powered chain sharpener designed for the precise mechanical sharpening of chains on chainsaws and brushcutters. The device is powered by an electric motor that rotates the grinding wheel at a speed of 6,500 min⁻¹. This rotational speed ensures rapid material removal from the steel cutting teeth without excessive frictional heat, which prevents the chain teeth from losing their hardness. The tool’s light weight of 1.7 kg (without the battery) makes it easy to move around, eliminating the need for a fixed power source.
The sharpening machine uses a standard-size grinding wheel with an outer diameter of 108 mm, a center hole of 23.0 mm, and a thickness of 3.2 mm. This wheel is suitable for sharpening most 1/4″, 3/8″ LP, and .325″ chains. The machine’s mechanical chain-locking system securely anchors the chain to the guide bar during sharpening. The locking mechanism eliminates vibration and lateral movement, ensuring identical geometry for every cutting tooth and restoring the chain’s original cutting efficiency.
The machine’s frame and precision-machined turntable allow for stepless adjustment of the sharpening angle within a range of 0–35 degrees. A clear, integrated scale ensures that the left and right rows of teeth on the chain can be sharpened to exactly the same angle. The control handle on the upper part of the machine is designed for optimal leverage, enabling precise and controlled feed of the grinding wheel to the cutting surface of the tooth, with the limit stop halting the movement at the programmed depth.
The YT-84980 is supplied as a complete set that includes a 2.0 Ah Li-Ion battery (YT-82842) and a AC charger. The battery is part of the Yato 18V system, making it fully compatible with other Yato cordless tools in the same voltage range. Lithium-ion technology delivers energy at a constant voltage until the battery is fully discharged, without the memory effect that reduces capacity, ensuring consistent sharpening performance in the field.
Intended Use and Suitability:
The device is designed for the maintenance of saw chains in conditions that require absolute dimensional accuracy and portability, eliminating the margin of human error associated with manual filing.
- Forest work sites and logging areas: Enables the machine-based sharpening of dull chains directly on site without the need for a power unit or inverter. Reduces the need for spare chains and minimizes downtime during sawing.
- Equipment and machinery rental companies: Designed for the standardized and rapid maintenance of chains on rental machines using a maintenance table. Ensures precise quality control for every saw return.
- Mobile service equipment: The machine's compact design allows for permanent installation at a service vehicle's workstation, enabling chain maintenance to be performed on the road or at the customer's premises.

Yato YT-84980 User Manual:
The installation and sharpening process must be carried out in accordance with the principles of mechanical machining to ensure a precise finish and the durability of the equipment.
1. Mount the device on a level work surface using screws or clamps. Secure the 108 mm grinding wheel to the spindle using the tool provided, and ensure the locking nut is tight.
2. Thread the saw chain onto the guide bar. Set the desired sharpening angle (e.g., 30 degrees) using the scale on the swivel table, in accordance with the chain manufacturer’s recommendations.
3. Lock the chain in place. Adjust the machine’s rear stop so that the blade, when turned off, lightly touches the cutting surface of the tooth. Set the depth stop with the screw so that the blade cannot bite into the drive link.
4. Insert the charged 18V battery into the battery slot until it locks into place.
5. Start the machine and feed the blade into the tooth with a smooth motion. Grind in short bursts of 1–2 seconds to prevent overheating.
6. First, sharpen all teeth pointing in the same direction. Open the swivel table, set the opposite angle (e.g., -30 degrees), and repeat the process for the remaining teeth.
