Between Lake Inari and the Norwegian border lies a rocky mosaic of pine forests, mires, and hundreds of lakes, which deters all but the most experienced hikers. In the northeast rises the Vätsärri fell ridge, whose birch forests were destroyed by the larvae of the mountain pine moth. The rocky fjords of Lake Inari extend into the wilderness, where a way of life based on traditional livelihoods continues in their recesses. The fish species are diverse, including pike-perch, lake trout, vendace, and vendace. Paddlers favor the narrow fjords and make use of the currents between the lakes. Routasenkuru is already almost legendary. The Piilola trail connects Vätsärri to Norway's Upper Alta National Park.
