The Salpausselkä, a glacial formation, once held back the waters of a vast lake until the Imatrankoski Rapids carved a channel through it. The magnificent Kyläniemi, with its sandy beaches, on the second Salpausselkä ridge still divides Lake Saimaa in two. Lakes and ridges have served as important transportation routes for millennia. The figures painted on the cliffs of Astuvansalmi tell of our ancestors’ relationship with the surrounding nature, which is still represented by the endangered Kuolimo char. The map covers southern Lake Saimaa from Lappeenranta to Kyläniemi, as well as Kuolimo, Yövesi, and Käkövesi. In addition to hiking information, it includes the historical and geological sites of the Geopark project. For the lakes, it provides depth readings, depth zones along the shores, navigation channels, and navigational markers. Saimaa Geopark preserves the geological heritage, history, and culture of Lake Saimaa. The goal is to increase residents’ appreciation for their home region and to integrate this valuable heritage into everyday life. Our maps are printed on high-quality Tyvek® material, which is waterproof and tear-resistant. This means you don’t need to protect your map from the rain, and it won’t tear during use. The manufacturer guarantees that the material can withstand 20,000 folds. Thanks to the ingenious layout, all of the area’s most important destinations fit on a single map.
